“Back in 1952 when we were born, my brother’s cleft was considered very severe. They filmed the surgeries as an educational tool for surgeons. His name is Johnny and his first surgery took place when he was 6 months old. My mother fed him with an eyedropper and he wore little braces on his arms so he couldn’t put his hands around his mouth. Part of his nose was missing. To this day he has a hole about the size of a nickel in the center of his palate with a tooth growing down in the front of the whole. He has adapted quite well, went to college, graduated and became an IT guy. Invested well and retired at the age of 52. He’s quite a guy.”
